Sarah Carrington
Sarah Carrington (b. 1977, Edinburgh) is a landscape painter whose work centres on the coastlines of Scotland and Ireland. Working in a mixed media approach that often combines emulsion, oil, ink, chalk and occasionally gold leaf, she builds layered surfaces that evoke the textures, atmosphere and shifting light of the shoreline. Her paintings explore the changing relationship between land, sea and sky, capturing both the drama of weather and the quiet expanses of coastal space.
Carrington studied at the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1999 with an MA (Hons) in Fine Art. Her degree show sold out and she quickly established herself as a full-time artist based in Edinburgh. Early influences came from childhood holidays on the west coast of Scotland and sailing trips around the Hebrides, experiences that continue to shape the landscapes she paints today.
Now based on the north coast of Northern Ireland, Carrington works from photographs, sketches and notes gathered on coastal walks. These observations are developed in the studio into atmospheric paintings that emphasise depth, distance and the meeting of sea and sky. Her work has been widely exhibited across the UK and is held in numerous private collections.
