Russell Hatton
Russell Hatton is a British abstract artist known for his striking, large-scale works on aluminium. After a long and successful career in industrial painting, Hatton transitioned into fine art, bringing with him a unique mastery of materials and surface.
Working with automotive-grade paints—such as pearlescent, candy, and metallic lacquers—he applies multiple layers at high pressure onto specially fabricated aluminium panels. Each piece is then carefully lacquered and polished, producing a high-gloss, reflective surface that shifts with the light and the viewer’s perspective. His works play with depth, illusion, and movement, combining technical precision with an intuitive sense of form and rhythm.
Light is central to Hatton’s practice. His surfaces respond dynamically to their surroundings, creating an immersive experience that draws the viewer in. Though rooted in control and craftsmanship, his process allows for spontaneity and the unexpected—what he describes as “an attempt to control the chaotic.”
His practice is also deeply personal. Following the loss of his son, Hatton found renewed meaning through painting. He signs his work “A + A” in tribute, acknowledging the presence of his son in everything he creates.
Russell Hatton has exhibited widely across the UK and is represented by several leading contemporary galleries. His work is admired for its boldness, technical innovation, and emotional depth.
