Rod Craig
Rod Craig is a British painter whose work captures the rhythm and atmosphere of the natural world through fluid, expressive use of water-based media. After a long career in graphic design and illustration, he became a full-time artist in 2010 and now works from his studio between Bath and Woodstock in Oxfordshire.
Born and raised in Warwickshire, Craig trained in graphic design and illustration at the West of England College of Art before establishing his own design company in Oxford. His years in design honed his eye for composition and tone, qualities that continue to inform his painting practice.
Working primarily in watercolour and ink on handmade rag paper, Craig explores the interplay between structure and spontaneity. His paintings often depict dramatic skies, shifting light and elemental forces that seem to move across the surface of the paper. He is less concerned with literal depiction than with evoking mood and memory- what he describes as a “sense of place defined only by atmosphere.”
Craig’s work has been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, including a solo exhibition in New York, and is held in private collections across Britain, Europe and the United States. He continues to draw inspiration from the landscapes that surround him, allowing the energy of music, weather and emotion to guide each painting.
