Paula Sharples

Paula graduated from Reigate School of Art in the early 1970s with a degree in Textile Design. She then spent 28 years as a freelance textile designer for the furnishing and bedding market, creating designs for renowned companies such as Coloroll, John Wolf Decorative Fabrics in the USA, Portmeirion and Churchill China.

Having grown up in Brighton, the coast has remained a constant source of inspiration for her paintings. Now based in the Peak District, she also draws from the stunning landscape surrounding her home.

“I work on gesso-prepared board and sometimes canvas, which I particularly enjoy when working on a larger scale. I use a mix of acrylics, ink, graphite and collage, often combining still life in the foreground with a landscape backdrop reminiscent of Italian frescoes, where a distant landscape is framed within the composition. My background in textile and ceramic design is evident in my use of colour and pattern.”
