Mairi Clark

Mairi Clark is a Scottish artist based on the east coast of Fife, whose richly textured oil paintings explore the shifting moods of sea and land.

She studied Fine Art at Chelsea College and Central Saint Martins in London, and her work reflects a fusion of bold, gestural mark-making with vivid, expressive colour. Influenced by artists such as Turner, Van Gogh and Joan Eardley, Clark captures the drama and luminosity of the Scottish landscape through a dynamic, emotional lens.

Her childhood memories of salmon-fishing holidays in the Highlands and along the north-east coast form a lasting source of inspiration. The ever-changing interplay of sky, sea, and light continues to shape her practice, which is grounded in a deep sense of place and atmosphere.

Clark works predominantly in oil, layering paint and scraping back into the surface to reveal texture and movement. “It is a very versatile medium,” she explains, “so many effects can be created by using it. I enjoy using different layers, then scraping back into the paint to produce dramatic results.”

Her paintings are abstracted yet rooted in nature, evoking the rhythm and vitality of Scotland’s coastline. “It is very important to me to capture a free and energetic mood in my work.”

Mairi Clark exhibits widely across the UK, and her paintings are held in private collections both in Britain and abroad.
