Liz Butler RWS MA (RCA)

Liz Butler RWS MA (RCA) is a British painter known for her intricate watercolours of gardens, landscape and the natural world. Working predominantly in pure watercolour, her paintings combine close observation with a strong sensitivity to changing light, weather and atmosphere.

Butler often begins with small watercolour sketches made on location, alongside photographs taken for reference. Back in the studio, she gradually builds the finished painting through delicate layers of colour, sometimes working with the very tip of the brush. Her subjects range from gardens and allotments to wider landscapes and scenes encountered through travel.

Born in Cumbria, Butler studied at Liverpool College of Art and the Royal College of Art. She was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1996 and became a full member in 2000.

Her work is held in several major collections, including the Royal Collection, the Government Art Collection, Abbot Hall in Kendal and Harewood House.
