Lillias August RI
Lillias August, a distinguished artist, was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 2006, having exhibited with the institute annually in London since 2000. Over the years, she has garnered numerous accolades, including eight awards from the RI alone. From 2014 to 2024, she served on the RI Council, contributing significantly to the artistic community.
August's local fenland landscape profoundly influences her still life paintings. She is known for her unpretentious style, presenting objects in a straightforward manner, often painting ordinary, everyday items close up and in multiples. This approach demands keen observation, encouraging viewers to see these items as if they were displayed in a museum, evoking personal feelings and memories.
Her working method is meticulous and planned, employing a restricted palette to gradually build up tone and colour. She works on a painting as a whole, starting with large washes and moving to more detailed structures. This careful progression allows her to achieve the sculptural and emotional qualities she seeks in her work. August's dedication to her craft and her unique perspective continue to captivate and inspire audiences.
