“My influences are particularly from the late medieval/early renaissance painters, especially the Flemish artists, who worked under commission, but remarkably retained a huge individuality in their vision. Inspiration is drawn from my everyday encounters, and is translated into narrative pieces, with elements of myth and story-telling. The imagery is often sparked around birds and animals, which have been a lifelong thrill, often 'making the day' by their presence. I work mostly with natural gesso panels, acrylics and gold leaf.

This series has been my main work this year. It is based on an extraordinary text from Ecclesiastes(3:19). I was bowled over to read this, where it says:

‘whatsoever befalleth the sons of men, befalleth beasts……even one thing befalleth them……. yea, they all have one breath’.

I can’t stop thinking about this ancient wisdom - its complete understanding of our biosphere, with its plea, its warning for connection to the natural world. It has been deeply inspiring for my work"
