John Paul

John Paul is a British painter whose work is rooted in direct observation and a longstanding interest in landscape, still life and the character of particular places. Working primarily in oil, his paintings are distinguished by a strong sense of colour, atmosphere and carefully balanced composition.

His subjects range from rural landscapes and coastal scenes to gardens, interiors and still life, often treated on an intimate scale. Paul responds closely to changing light and season, using a direct and economical approach to capture the essential character of a scene.

Born in Chelsea, London in 1940, Paul studied at Camberwell School of Art from 1956 to 1959. He has exhibited widely throughout his career and has been closely involved with a number of established artists’ societies.

He served as President of the London Sketch Club from 1999 to 2000 and is Honorary Treasurer of the Small Paintings Group.
