John O'Connor

John O’Connor is a British sculptor known for his expressive contemporary figurative work that explores human emotion through form and gesture. Born in Suffolk in 1967, O’Connor came to sculpture through an unconventional route, initially working as a bricklayer before undertaking formal training at the Sculpture Academy in London in 1999. His background in construction continues to inform his strong physical engagement with materials and form.

Working primarily in bronze and resin, O’Connor creates stylised figures that balance weight and fragility, often exaggerating posture and proportion to convey psychological presence rather than strict anatomical realism. His sculptures focus on universal human experiences such as vulnerability, reflection and resilience, presenting solitary figures that invite quiet contemplation.

Central to O’Connor’s practice is an interest in communicating shared emotional states. Through simplified surfaces and expressive distortion, his work captures moments of introspection and stillness, allowing viewers to project their own narratives onto the figures. The sculptures possess a gentle humanity, combining technical craftsmanship with emotional sensitivity.

O’Connor has exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, and his work is held in numerous private collections. His practice continues to explore the enduring relevance of the human figure within contemporary sculpture, emphasising connection, empathy and the subtle language of gesture.
