John Crossley LG RWS

John Crossley LG RWS is a British painter whose abstract works explore colour, structure and the emotional possibilities of painted surfaces. Built through a gradual process of addition and subtraction, his paintings develop in layers, creating complex relationships between colour, shape, pattern and texture.

Colour is central to Crossley’s practice, used not simply as decoration but as a means of suggesting mood, sensation and ways of experiencing the world. His compositions often emerge intuitively through the painting process, with successive layers revealing and obscuring what lies beneath.

Born in Dagenham, Essex in 1952, Crossley studied at St Martin’s School of Art from 1970 to 1974. He was elected a member of The London Group in 1978 and became a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2017, having previously been elected an Associate in 2015.

Crossley has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, and his work is held in both public and private collections.
