Ivy Smith
Ivy Smith is a British painter and printmaker whose work encompasses landscape, seascape, still life and the human figure. Based in Norwich, she has a particular affinity with the landscape and coastline of East Anglia, where changing light, weather and movement provide a constant source of inspiration.
Drawing underpins Smith’s practice, whether she is working in oils, watercolour, linocut or etching. In recent years the seaside has become an increasingly important subject, with paintings made directly from observation along the Norfolk coast. Her work captures both the physical character of a place and the fleeting effects of light, tide and atmosphere.
Smith studied Painting and Printmaking at Chelsea School of Art before completing a postgraduate diploma at the Royal Academy Schools, where she was awarded the Gold Medal and the Edward Stott Travelling Scholarship.
Her work is held in numerous public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Norwich Castle Museum. She has taught at the Royal Drawing School since 2001.
