Fiona MacRae is a Scottish painter who grew up in Argyll and continues to live and work on Scotland’s west coast. She studied Painting and Drawing at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 2000, and also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Since graduating, she has pursued a full-time career as an artist, exhibiting throughout the UK and internationally.

Fiona is best known for her distinctive tabletop still lifes, bringing together familiar objects such as pottery, kitchen utensils, textiles, fruit, fish and other collected finds. Many of these objects have been accumulated over years of searching through junk shops, online and along the shoreline – a process she likens to beachcombing.

Although domestic in subject, her paintings are strongly influenced by the landscape of the Scottish islands and west coast. The muted greys of sea, sky and wet sand, earthy browns and occasional flashes of lichen-like colour inform both her palette and the carefully balanced structure of her compositions.

Colour lies at the heart of Fiona’s practice. Through simplified forms, flattened planes, layering, scratching and expressive mark-making, she transforms everyday objects into playful and highly individual studies of colour, pattern and form.
