Charlotte Halliday

Charlotte Halliday is a British painter known particularly for her delicate architectural watercolours and drawings. Working directly from observation, she is fascinated by the changing effects of light on buildings, streets and gardens, with London providing a recurring source of inspiration throughout her career.

Halliday often works on location in watercolour and pencil, responding to the character of individual buildings and the patterns created by sunlight, bare branches and surrounding foliage. In later years, flowers from her own garden in Sussex have also become an important and recurring subject.

Born in 1935, Halliday studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1953 to 1957, where she was awarded the Silver Medal for Drawing. She became a member of the New English Art Club in 1961 and was appointed its Keeper in 1989. She was elected a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1976 and has exhibited widely throughout her career.
