Aimee Birnbaum RI
Aimee Birnbaum RI creates paintings of dancers and spirits in otherworldly settings that tap into the depths of subconscious desire. In her primeval forests, Arcadian landscapes, and magical glades, souls blossom, trees grow breasts and hold hands, and animals seem to speak. Her dancers might be ancient goddesses, woodland spirits, or figments of her imagination. Her work embodies physical vigour, sensuality and a sense of movement. As a dancer herself, she uses her muscle memory to inform the anatomy of fleeting motion. Fascinated by the strange, uncanny, magical, and mysterious, she feels an unseen force breathes life into her images. Currently, she works with watercolour and acrylic.
Aimee Birnbaum has received numerous prizes and awards, including The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers Award and the June Stokes-Roberts Bursary for Painting in Watercolours. She is a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in London. Born in New York City, she trained at the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston. She works in her studios in Tuscany and London and is a member of the Southbank Printmakers and the Greenwich Printmakers. Her accolades also include the National Print Exhibition Kew Studio Prize, the Royal Watercolour Society St. Cuthbert’s Mill Award, and the Ben Uri Gallery Printmaking Prize.
